dear members,
my neighbour in Midrand a good friend of mine is working now as an editor in L.A.-USA.
Charlene Avis- born in Port Alfred - was working before in the fashion industry- last position: Head of the Fashion desk of the EDGAR group.
Since a few years she is now living  in L:A  and I did visit her in June 2005 (see my article about Johhny Clegg below).

She introduced me to the magazine called Juluka

Since then I get it monthly.  This is a mag  for SA people living abroad even if it is geared for the SA people living in the US, (see also my article in the mailbag below).

A lot of the articles are of great interest for any SA - living in any part of the world.
Articles about our beloved country- cooking recipes and political issues from a CT based journalist.
Helmut will put this into our webpage so that members can look it up and can even order the mag. (payment with credit card; posted by Air mail )

Anyone who want to share the mag with me can do so please write to me (e-mail address above) but please return - I would like to keep it.

In return Charlene could put an article in from us - we SA in Munich- to be a link to SA people in LA.

I think the idea is great.

Dorothea

Meeting Johnny Clegg

by Dorothea Strohm

I was on holiday for two weeks in Los Angeles and I would like to share my experiences with you. I met so many South Africans more then ever before outside of my beloved home country.

My friend, Charlene, I visited is an Ex- South African from PE. She is an editor of the magazine  JULUKA. Previously she worked at the fashion desk for the EDGAR group.

JOHNNY CLEGG was there on concert tour and I saw him and his band one night.
Before the concert we had a braai in the nearby park with real SA food.
Melktart and the works like the South Africans love it - lekker !

We had free tickets - for the press- and afterwards my friend took me to the interview with Johnny Clegg.

I have always been a fan of him and I nearly fainted. I think he is great .

Charlene and Johnny

The whole atmosphere at the concert was very South African as a lot of South Africans living in San Diego were there. It was in an open theatre direct at the marina. We were dancing under the stars!

Then during my stay in L.A. I accompanied my friend to certain shops- selling only S.A.food- and clubs were she was showing and selling the Juluka Magazine.

We went to a bar: Springbok Bar- see picture. You close your eyes
and you feel you are back in South Africa. I think there are 21 clubs in the USA alone and most of them have the springbok in their name!
That is my story - I told it already to various people I met at our annual braai in July and showed proudly the picture of Johnny.

Tot siens
Dorothea
